How to enhance bonsai fence

Bonsai can be wired year-round for most tree species; large twists should be done during the tree’s (winter) rest period. If you sprout new buds you can make big twists in them even during the growing season.

Two types of wire can be used: anodized aluminum and annealed copper. It is not necessary to buy all available calibers; With 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.5 mm and 4 mm thick wire is perfect to start. When wiring thick branches or twisting to be large, it is recommended to first wrap it with raffia, which will protect the branches and avoid as far as possible the branch when damaged.

The angle at which the wire should be placed around the branch or trunk determines whether it will be retained in its place or not; the perfect angle is 45º. If you make rings close to each other they will act as a spring and may not be as effective.

The bonsai wiring must be firmly attached to the bark with the necessary force; too tight can damage the bark and little subject will cause the wire to come loose.

After having wired the entire tree you can begin to bend and place the branches in position. To fold a branch, use your hands so that it holds the outside of the branch with your fingers and bend the branch by placing your thumbs on the inside of the curve.
